The Pearl by John Steinbeck Book Redesign.
Type selection and setting.
Illustration.
Book layout and design.
Objective
The main objective for this project was to select one short story and redesign the entire book as it pertains to type setting, typographic layout, and image design elements.
The Pearl by John Steinbeck is a story about a pearl diver named Kino living in a small village in Mexico. Kino discovers an enormous and beautiful pearl, which he believes will bring his family immense wealth and prosperity. On the contrary, Kino’s intense desire and greed evolve into destructive behaviors over the course of the novel, leading to a tragic conclusion and ultimately the destruction of his moral character and life.
To evoke the central themes of the desire for wealth, greed, and the inherent dangers of uncontrolled human desires, I utilized a dark color palette, enlarged illustrative elements, and culturally-inspired typographic references to portray my interpretation of this timeless novel.
